the tv:

The tv is already connected to the WIFI. You should be able to login to your entertainment subscriptions you have at home. Netflix, Prime etc. The channels programmed are free-to-air.

groceries:

The IGA is open until 7pm Monday to Saturday. Closes early on a Sunday at 6pm.

Cashless payment is ONLY accepted. NO CASH, card only (or phone, or watch, or ring).

Please remember to bring any shopping bags if you have some. If not, there is a bin outside the front entrance that people leave shopping bags in for others to use. Alternatively, the store has 15c plastic bags.

Try to go before 4pm each day as this is when it gets very busy, and sometimes you may miss out on certain food items.

The bottle shop is right next door. IGA is located down on the marina or otherwise known as Front Street, past the post office.

restaurants:

If you haven’t already made some bookings for dinner, it is recommended you make booking reservations. Use the Hamilton Island App to make reservations.

Recommendations: we are a family with an eleven-year-old, so we like the Pool Terrace, The Marina Tavern and the Pizza and Gelato.

drinking water:

Is the water from the tap safe to drink? It certainly is. It tastes best when it is cold. If the tap water is not up to your tastebuds (we know it’s got a slight tang to it), the IGA sell bulk water bottles.

The Birds:

We can’t stress this enough. Please keep the doors closed. The birds on the island are brutal when it comes to stealing food from balconies, kitchen benches, tables, bags, golf buggies. They know how to open screen doors and get in. Please be aware that they will take food from bags if you have some at the beach and pool. They will take food if left in the buggy. This includes any bags of rubbish left on the buggy or in the open. Please DO NOT feed them, as tempting as it is, the birds can not process the foods and start to lose their feathers.

washing machine and dryer:

You will find the washing machine and dryer in the laundry. If the dryer has been running for too long, it will need time to cool down in between loads. This is a safety feature so as not to overheat.

the buggy:

Please enjoy driving the buggy around the island. You will need to remember to plug it in to charge overnight. Please keep an eye on the battery level if you are taking it for a spin around the island. If you run out of battery, you will need to call the host, and it is a costly call-out fee to recharge the battery by the resident buggy man.

pools:

Besides the stunning Poinciana pool down the end of the driveway, you are also allowed to swim in most of the resort pools. This includes the main pool (the one with the swim-up bar), the dolphin pool (the very deep pool) and the Bougainvillea Pool (slightly heated during winter). Remember to bring your towels back from the pool, as they won’t be replaced during your stay, and you will be charged for lost items.

the beach:

Check the tide times here. Two hours before low tide is a great time to go out and snorkel. You may also see a turtle or two swimming about. Snorkel gear can be hired from Catseye Beach.

Should you wear a stinger suit? Absolutely. Many guests are stung by the Irukandji Jellyfish. They are extremely small and extremely painful, often resulting in the patient having to be transported off the island for further medical care. Please see the beach hut to hire a stinger suit or stick to swimming in the pools during stinger season.

If you are stung: call 000. You may not realise you have been stung. Symptoms include: “excruciating muscle cramps in the arms and legs, severe pain in the back and kidneys, a burning sensation of the skin and face, headaches, nausea, restlessness, sweating, vomiting, and an increase in heart rate and blood pressure”. PLEASE CALL 000 for medical help. There is a paramedic and ambulance on the island at all times.

checking out:

Your host will arrange check out with you. They will tell you when your luggage is to be ready for transport back to the airport/ferry. They will also let you know where to leave the buggy and hand back the keys.

We do ask that you respect the way the apartment is left. Our cleaning team work very hard in often very humid conditions so we just ask that rubbish is placed in the bin. Any dirty dishes, cutlery, and crockery are placed in the dishwasher. Any food that is not opened, please leave in the fridge as often the cleaning team will utilise what is left to avoid wastage. Please avoid leaving toenail clippings. If you need to cut your toenails, please go outside. No one wants to find someone else’s nail clippings and have to clean them up. Thank you.
